10 TIPS FOR WEIGHT REDUCTION IN THE OVERWEIGHT HORSE

Good Practices

Always provide clean, fresh water.
Horses need to have clean, fresh water at all times, unless the horse is extremely hot. If the horse is hot allow it only a few swallows of water until it is cooled down.

Measure feed by weight, not volume.
Oats and corn weigh different amounts even though the same volume fills the coffee can. Feeding this way changes the energy the horse receives on a daily basis. If you are feeding a bagged feed the weight could be the same each feeding with the coffee can, however coffee are not all the same size. Coffee cans different in size with each brand and flavor.

Feed at the same time every day.
Horses are creatures of habit, feeding them at the same time every day helps reduce possible digestive upsets. Spacing the meals throughout the day is also healthier for the horse.

Control the parasites.
Parasites cause many digestive problems in horses. Regular deworming and proper manure management will help to control the parasite problems. Deworming will depend on each stable/pasture and the number of horses and size of pen.

Check the teeth regularly.
Horses chew in a circular motion which can lead to the development of sharp points. Sharp points can cause the horse to go off feed because he may bite his cheeks when eating which is painful.

Salt
Horses need free choice access to a salt or trace mineral block at all times.
