How Much Hay and How Much Grain?

A horse can eat 2.0 - 2.5 % of its body weight per day.  Most generally 2.0 % is used to calculate total intake.  Forage is always most important and should always be no less that 50% of the horses diet.  Forage should preferably represent more than 50% of your horses diet.

Feeding Guildlines

                                                Forage %       Grain %

Barren/Maiden Mares              1.0 – 1.5          .5 – 1.0

Early Pregnancy                       1.5 – 2             .5

Late Pregnancy                        1.0 – 1.5          .5 – 1.0

Early Lactation                         1.0 – 2.0          1.0

Late Lactation                          1.0 – 2.0          1.0

Example:  A maiden mare that weighs 1100 lbs. would consume approximately 16.5 lbs of hay and 5.5 lbs of grain per day.

                  (1100lbs) x 1.5% = 16.5 lbs of hay

                  (1100lbs) x .5% = 5.5 lbs of grain
