DEWORMING
Deworming horses can greatly decrease the incidence of colic and is an
important part of their preventative health care program. Researchers have found
that colic can be significantly reduced by putting horses on the continuous
daily dewormer (Strongid C) or by deworming every 60 days.
Because internal parasites develop resistance to medications, we recommend
using a variety of different dewormers. When rotating dewormers, it is important
to use ones that are not similar in chemistry. Fortunately several new deworming
products have been developed, many of which are in a paste form and can be
easily administered by mouth. Other medications are given in combination through
a stomach tube.
It is essential to remember to use an ivermectin product or Quest Plus after the
killing frost in the fall to kill stomach bots.

An alternative deworming program consists of feeding the continuous daily
dewormer (Strongid C) and using a boticide (Equimax) after a
killing frost in the fall and again in the spring.
Pfizer, the makers of Strongid C, has developed the PreventiCare Program.
While on this program, Pfizer will pay the first $5,000 of a colic surgery if
your horse should ever need it. There are a few requirements to meet in order to
qualify for this program. Along with feeding your horse Strongid C daily and
deworming with Equimax, in the fall and spring, you must have a yearly
physical exam, dental exam, and nutritional consult performed on your horse. All
yearly vaccinations must be given by your participating veterinarian or
purchased from that veterinarian.
