Foaling Checklist

1.           Clean your mare’s udder region with water and Ivory dish soap.

2.           Make sure the foal breaks through the placenta and is breathing.

3.           Don’t cut the umbilical cord; allow it to break when the mare is ready to get up on her own.

4.           Check that the foal is standing and nursing within 3 hours of birth.

5.           If the placenta has not dropped from the mare in 3 hours, call your veterinarian.  DO NOT pull the placenta out of the mare; you most likely will tear the inside of mare.

6.           Save the placenta for the veterinarian to examine the color and check for tears.

7.           Dip the foal’s navel with dilute betadine or dilute nolvasan solution three times a day for the first 3-4 days.

8.           Give the foal an enema and procaine penicillin injection.

9.           Schedule your veterinarian to check your mare and foal, when your foal is at least 24 hours old.

10.       Check your mare’s vulva region for any tears.

11.       Monitor your mare and foal for any signs of colic or poor appetite and call your vet if seen.
