FOALING CHECKLIST

bullet

Clean your mare’s udder region with water and Ivory dish soap.

bullet

Make sure the foal breaks through the placenta and is breathing.

bullet

Don’t cut the umbilical cord; allow it to break when the mare is ready to get up on her own.

bullet

Check that the foal is standing and nursing within 3 hours of birth.

bullet

If the placenta has not dropped from the mare in 3 hours, call your veterinarian.  DO NOT pull the placenta out of the mare; you most likely will tear the inside of mare.

bullet

Save the placenta for the veterinarian to examine the color and check for tears.

bullet

Dip the foal’s navel with dilute betadine or dilute nolvasan solution three times a day for the first 3-4 days.

bullet

Give the foal an enema and procaine penicillin injection.

bullet

Schedule your veterinarian to check your mare and foal, when your foal is at least 24 hours old.

bullet

Check your mare’s vulva region for any tears.

bullet

Monitor your mare and foal for any signs of colic or poor appetite and call your vet if seen.
