PREGNANT MARES

(1) At 5 months confirmed pregnancy.  Pregnant mares should receive Pneumabort shots to prevent abortion caused by Rhinopneumonitis at 5, 7, and 9 months.

(2) If your mare is on a progesterone supplement, you should have her progesterone levels checked before taking her off the supplement.

(3) Vaccinate your mare 4 to 6 weeks prior to foaling with (1) Sleeping Sickness, Tetanus, West Nile Virus, (2) Potomac Horse Fever, (3) Influenza/Rhinopneumonitis (4) EVA.  This will boost the mare’s antibodies early enough to ensure the highest possible antibody levels in her colostrum, which protects the newborn foal from diseases.

(4) If your mare has a caslick, it should be opened 4 weeks prior to her approximate foaling date to prevent any problems during birth.

 (5) Mares and foals require special attention.  Mares in foal should be fed high quality feed and dewormed regularly with a dewormer approved for use in pregnant mares.
