STEP 1 - STALLION CONTRACT

Good communication with the stallion owner is essential for successfully breeding mares with transported semen. The stallion and mare owners must agree on the following points (ideally in writing):

Breeding fee? What guarantees are presented if the mare does not get bred or does not deliver a live foal (24 hours old and/or standing and nursing)? Can you substitute a different mare if something happens to this particular mare or if she does not produce a foal? Who pays for the stallion collection? Who pays for the shipping charges for the semen shipment and the return of the container? What days are the stallion collected? Will they collect the stallion of "off" days? How far in advance does the stallion owner need to be notified that a shipment is needed? How will the semen be shipped (Federal Express, UPS, or airline counter)? What breed association paperwork needs to be completed?
