STEP 3 - INSEMINATING THE MARE The veterinarian monitors the mare’s heat cycle by palpating the ovaries
and monitoring the progressive growth and softening of a follicle. Semen is
ordered to arrive for insemination 12 - 24 hours before the mare ovulates.
It takes time to set up the collection and allow shipping of semen: so it is
usually ordered 48 - 72 hours to get the collection and 24 hours to ship the
collection. When the semen arrives the quality of the semen is evaluated an the mare is inseminated under sterile conditions. Further palpation monitors the time of ovulation. If the mare does not ovulate, it is necessary to order a second shipment or to give the mare drugs to induce ovulation. Once the mare ovulates, any further uterine treatments are completed and the mare is sent home for 15 to 16 days to await her ultrasound examination. Daily teasing should be resumed after breeding to determine if she comes back into heat. |
