Grooming
Whether you have a short haired or long haired pet, grooming is important. Regular brushing and bathing will help control shedding. The activity level of your dog will determine how often their nails need to be trimmed- make sure to check them every few weeks. It is important to trim them as they can grow long enough to curl around and grow into the pads of the feet. Remember that dew claws do not contact the ground, therefore do not get worn down with the other nails.
Long haired dogs need to be brushed several times a week to prevent fur matting. In the summer, if they are outside dogs, it is important for them to have access to shade at all times, and their hair be free of mats to prevent heat distress. If daily brushing is difficult to fit into your schedule, consider having them shaved in the summer.
Ear cleaning is also important, especially in dogs with long, floppy ears or dog that go swimming frequently. To help prevent ear infections, clean your dog’s ears monthly with cotton balls and tap water or an approved ear cleaning solution (not hydrogen peroxide or vinegar). If your dog is shaking his head a lot, or scratching at his ears frequently, he/she may have an ear infection. Bring them to see the veterinarian very soon, as ignoring an infection can lead to inner ear problems and hearing loss.
