VACCINATIONS
Puppies should
receive their first vaccination to protect against Distemper, Parvovirus,
and several other diseases at 6 to 10 weeks of age. At least two more
booster shots are then given at 3-4 week intervals to ensure solid
protection against these common and fatal diseases. Along with this 3-shot
puppy series, a Rabies vaccination is needed after your puppy is 12 weeks
old. Other vaccinations to consider at this time include Kennel Cough, which
is a highly contagious, cold-like disease, and Lymes, which is a disease
transmitted by a tick that is present in this part of the country.
Kittens should receive their first
vaccination to protect against "Feline Distemper," a combination of cold and
pneumonia-causing diseases, at 6 to 10 weeks of age. Two more booster shots
are then given at 3-4 week intervals. Another disease prevalent in this area
that we recommend testing for and vaccinating against is Feline Leukemia.
This is a viral disease that is fatal and virtually untreatable, but can be
prevented through vaccination. The first shot is given at 9-10 weeks of age,
and a booster is given 3 weeks later. A Rabies vaccination is given after 12
weeks of age.
Regular check ups include having your pets heart
and lungs listened too, temperature taken, skin, teeth, ears, and anal sacs
checked.

DEWORMING
Puppies -
A high percentage of puppies have
intestinal parasites. They can be picked up from other animal's feces, from
contaminated soil and water, and from the mother. These parasites may slow
growth and cause other health problems. Bring a fresh stool sample to be
checked under the microscope to ensure that your puppy's health is not
compromised by parasites.

Heartworms can be a serious problem in dogs and cats, but the
disease it 100% preventable. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm larvae from
infected animals to healthy animals. Heartworms live in the hearts and lungs
of infected dogs and cats. If left untreated, heartworm disease
may be fatal to your pet. All dogs should be tested for heartworm
infection before starting a preventive
program. In our area we recommend that your pet is on Heartgard
during the mosquito season. If you prefer, Heartgard is for your dog
to be on year-round.
